In their performance for The Lyric this season, the boys will perform Christmas classics, from “Silver Bells” to “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Other Nostalgia Concert Series highlights include New York jazz ensemble The Hot Sardines. Lyric Announces Leadership Changes
YOUR VOICE, APRIL 17, 2015
By Shelley Koppel
Staff writer
STUART – There aren’t many women in theatrical management, so the announcement that Kia Fontaine has been named the new Executive Director of the Lyric Theatre is exciting news. John Loesser, who has led the Lyric for the past 16 years, will become Artistic Director, focusing on fundraising, public relations and artistic programming. The new positions were announced by the Lyric’s Board of Directors and took effect April 1.
Fontaine, who has been Assistant Executive Director since 2008, will be responsible for day-to-day operations and theater management. Before coming to the Lyric, she served as Historic preservation officer and deputy city clerk for the city of Fort Pierce. She is a life-long resident of the Treasure Coast. Her interest in the arts spans most of her life.
“I was 6 when I performed in my first opera, ‘La Boheme,’” she said. “I was a street urchin. It was the Treasure Coast Opera Society. I was also in the Children’s Choir at church. When I performed in the opera, I knew that what I wanted to do was be on stage or managing.”
Fontaine continued to audition and perform in area choirs, plays and operas.
“My father started a production company,” she said. “He would rent venues and we would put on shows. In 2001, we met John Loesser during the City of City of Fort Pierce Centennial celebrations. We got to talking. I called John when an opening came up and I had a theater background. He said, ‘Let’s get together and talk.’” We met for coffee.
I was working for the City of Fort Pierce. He told me he wanted me to think about it because it was a big change in my life. I slept on it and said, ‘I’m game. Let’s talk.’ He put me in every facet: hospitality, stage management, marketing, contract administration and overseeing the facility and operations. He said, ‘Give me five years and I will train you in the theater.’”
Fontaine plans to take things slowly in the beginning.
“I’d like to continue John’s legacy,” she said. “He’s done such an incredible job during his tenure. He took it from a small community theater to a well-known, recognized performing arts center. I want to keep the tradition of excellence alive. What is established here is fantastic.”
Fontaine said the biggest challenge is maintaining and building an audience.
“I want to develop a younger patron and membership base,” she said. “There will be more family programing and arts and education. The challenge is to nurture and develop a younger audience base.”
The new director said that the upcoming season will be announced in May and ticket will go on sale to members May 26.
“Next year will have a fabulous lineup of shows,” she said.
“There’s something for everyone and a few big names. Memberships start at $35 members get first crack at tickets. It helps support the mission of the Lyric, to provide the community with a home for the performing arts that entertain, educates and stimulates the growth of artistic integrity and experience for everyone,”
For his part, John Loesser said he is putting the Lyric in good hands.
“I can’t think of a better person in the performing arts world to assume command of the Lyric,” he said in the press release announcing the changes.
“In my entire career, I have never known anyone that I could have recommended that would put the Lyric in better hands than Kia, and I look forward to working with her for many years to come.”
Writers note:
I have worked with Kia Fontaine for the entire time she has been at the Lyric, and she has always answered my requests for information or interviews with patience, professionalism wit and humor. She is an asset to the Lyric and it is wonderful to see that tear in the theatrical glass curtain.
The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. For more information, call (772) 286-7827 or visit the website www.lyrictheatre.com.

"I can't tell you how much our daughter McKenna, loved Lyric camp. This is our first summer to enroll her. We have always known she has a theatrical interest. We are so proud of her. She learned so much and had so much fun during such a short time. Your staff is fantastic. She cried after the final sharing program because she loves the counselors and the other campers. She will miss them until next summer. She felt so special. I can't thank you enough for her truly AWESOME experience!"
"My husband, Cassidy, and I agree that there is no better camp on the Treasure Coast! Thank you, and all the volunteers and staff, for offering such an enriching program for the children. We are looking forward to next year."

Stuart #3 - "Best Small Towns to Visit in 2015" by Smithsonian Magazine
The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2015
From sea to shining sea, our top picks for the most amazing American small towns to see this year
Smithsonian.com
When it comes to places to take a vacation, it’s easy to think of America’s big cities: Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Miami. But America is filled with wonders that are less heralded but no less magnificent, from the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest to the moss-draped bayous of the South. Along the way, there are sparkling caves, thundering waterfalls, quirky festivals, historic buildings, inspiring art and world-class food—all packed into towns with a smaller population than many college campuses.
For the fourth annual version of our list, we once again worked with the geographical information company ESRI to sort the nation’s small towns (those with a population under 20,000) according to their number of cultural attractions, historical sites, nature opportunities and food-and-drink destinations, then researched to find the places commemorating important anniversaries, openings, renovations, recoveries and other milestones in 2015. Think of this list not as a ranking but as a menu, with something for every taste—whether it’s country bluegrass, Florida’s white beaches or Alaska’s blue mountains.
Perched on the most biodiverse lagoon ecosystem in the Northern hemisphere, the St. Lucie Inlet, Stuart is surrounded by opportunities to revel in nature and the arts as well as indulge your inner history buff. See the sea turtles on warm summer nights at the nearby Hobe Sound Nature Center, (gently) touch a stingray at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, or visit the House of Refuge—a former haven for shipwrecked sailors operated by the United States Lifesaving Service and now a beautiful historical museum. Stuart also boasts the newly renovated Lyric Theatre, a former silent movie palace now hosting concerts and art-house movies. And this July, Florida’s “Treasure Coast” commemorates the event that gave the region its name—the 1715 hurricane that struck Florida’s east coast, sinking 11 Spanish galleons laden with New World silver and gold. The summer, area events include a two-day conference at the Vero Beach Museum of Art (about an hour north of Stuart), lectures and public exhibitions.

Albert Cummings
at The Lyric Theatre Apr 24, 2015 7:00 pm
Called “sizzling” by Billboard Magazine, blues guitarist and virtuoso Albert Cummings comes to The Lyric Theatre this April for a performance of genre-defying blues. Over his 15-year career, Cummings has worked with some of the best, including Double Trouble, BB King, and Johnny Winter. With a background in bluegrass, the blues musician is known for his passion for pushing boundaries and developing an individual style unlike any other.
A Massachusetts native, Albert Cummings learned guitar as a young man from his father. At the age of 12, he switched to the banjo, traveling across the country to music festivals and winning several high school picking contests. It wasn’t until Cummings was in college that he returned to the guitar. After seeing the great Stevie Ray Vaughan perform, Albert Cummings devoted himself fully to the blues. In the ‘90s, Cummings formed the short-lived band Swamp Yankee, only to begin a wildly successful solo career by the beginning of the 21st century. After playing briefly with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section Double Trouble, Cummings recorded the 2003 album, From the Heart (Under the Radar) with Vaughan’s former bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton. A year later, Albert Cummings signed with Blind Pig Records, beginning a long relationship that still stands to this day.
Beloved by fans and praised by his peers, Albert Cummings’s best is yet to come. When he’s not building award-winning homes in his spare time, the blues musician is hard at work perfecting his style and bringing his signature blues to audiences across the country. His latest, yet to be titled, album features the leader of Conan O’Brien’s Basic Cable Band, Jimmy Vivino. The album, produced by the legendary David Z, will be released later this summer. But, don’t wait for the album. Experience Albert Cummings live this April at The Lyric Theatre.
