Exploring the possibilities of progressive, classical and world influences, yet rooted with the soul of the blues and R&B, Joseph Puerta, Christopher North, David Pack and Burleigh Drummond created a new sound that was defined and recognized as “Ambrosia”. Originally labeled as America’s answer to the progressive invasion of such English acts as “Yes” and “King Crimson”, the group quickly proved it was all that and much more as it’s albums painted aural landscapes covering the gamut of musical styles and attracting the collaboration of such cultural icons as, Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Alan Parsons. In it’s brief recording history, Ambrosia garnered 5 Grammy Nominations, 5 Hit Singles, Heavy FM Airplay and the admiration and respect of the musical community. All this was in addition to Sold Out concerts around the world.

Battle of bands to aid Lyric outreach

Shelley Koppel
Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
Friday, January 22, 2016

STUART – The Lyric Theatre is gearing up for an epic Battle of the Bands. Middle and high school students from Martin and St. Lucie counties are invited to submit videos of their groups on YouTube from Feb. 15-March 14. Finalists will be selected by judges from the League in combination with YouTube ratings. Finalists will be announced by April 15 and will compete May 7 on the Lyric stage.

Bands may compete in one of two categories: garage bands with two or more members with instruments and school ensembles with no more than 25 members playing instruments. Bands can include singers. There is a $25 registration fee that will benefit the Lyric’s arts and education programs.

On May 7, finalists will compete for prizes. Winners will be selected by judges and audience choice votes. The garage band winner will win a cash prize and the opportunity to open for a Lyric show next season. The ensemble/school band winner will have the choice of a cash scholarship or Lyric Master Class for the school.

The new event is sponsored by the Lyric League, an auxiliary group formed to help the Lyric in its mission of providing a home for the performing arts that entertains and educates. The Battle of the Bands is intended to support local, young talent ns to raise funds to expand the Lyric’s arts and education programs such as Artists in Residence, Children’s Discovery Series and the Awesome Summer Camp.
Funds will be raised through the May 7th event with sponsorships, ticket sales and audience choice votes Audience members will have the opportunity to put dollar bills in the box for a particular band as a vote.

Colleen Schramm is co-chair of the Lyric League. She spoke about it and the Battle of the Bands.

“What we’re trying to do is come up with an annual signature event that will be our key fundraising event for the league and publicize what we do,” she said. “It’s for education and outreach. We’d like to start doing ticket underwriting, so more children have the opportunity to attend events.”

Schramm became involved when her daughter, who attends private school, had the opportunity to meet one of the flautists performing at the Lyric. The performer visited her school.

“The kids in our band thought he was a hero,” Schramm said. “I thought, ‘Wow, that left and impression.’ I didn’t realize that someone has to pay when an artist comes to the school. When I was approached to join the League, it was an opportunity to get more children to experience this type of thing.”

Niki Norton, the League’s other co-chair said the Battle of the Bands was a good fit for the Lyric.

“The Lyric is about performing and there’s raw, interesting talent,” she said. “It’s a great tie to the Lyric and a way to increase our demographics, age-wise. We’ll tap into middle and high school kids and their parents and bring it to a whole new audience. It’s a way to approach a whole different audience. People don’t know the Lyric is a non-profit and in an historic building. There is a uniqueness people don’t know about. I’m excited about it. It’s the first event and I’m putting a lot of energy into it.”

If you have middle or high-schoolers who are in public or private school or are home schooled, who live in Martin or St. Lucie counties and dream of being on the stage, tell them to pick their best music and post it to YouTube. Who knows what might happen!

Flyers and posters about the Battle of the Band are being distributed to local middle and high schools, music stores and other sites. For more information about the Battle of the Bands or the Lyric League, contact Karin Leone at (772) 220-1942, ext. 205 or Karin@lyrictheatre.com. More information about entering the competition is at www.lyrictheatre.com.

Darlene Love - Saved (1965)

Darlene Love is coming to The Lyric - February 22nd & 23rd!

Darlene Love, born July 26, 1941 ) is an American popular music singer and actress. She gained prominence in the 1960s for the song "He's a Rebel," a #1 American single in 1962, and was one of the Phil Spector artists who produced a celebrated Christmas album in 1963. Darlene Wright was born in 1941 (according to her autobiography). She began singing with her local church choir in Hawthorne, California. While still in high school (1959) she was invited to join a little-known girl group called The Blossoms, who in 1962 began working with producer Phil Spector. With her powerful voice she was soon a highly sought-after vocalist, and managed to work with many of the legends of 1950s and 1960s rock and soul, including Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Sonny and Cher; Darlene and the Blossoms sang back-up vocals on the Shelley Fabares hit "Johnny Angel", Sharon Marie (Esparza) (a Brian Wilson act), as well as John Phillips' solo album John, Wolfking of L.A., recorded in 1969. They also appeared on Johnny Rivers' hits, including "Poor Side of Town" and Motown covers "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "The Tracks of My Tears". (The Blossoms recorded singles, usually with little success, on Capitol 1957-58 [pre-Darlene Love], Challenge 1961-62, OKeh 1963, Reprise 1966-67, Ode 1967, MGM 1968, Bell 1969-70, and Lion 1972.) With The Blossoms, Love also sang backing vocals on many of the biggest hits of the 1960s, including Spector's own "Da Doo Ron Ron" (allegedly recorded with her lead, which was later erased by Spector and re-recorded using Crystals' lead Dolores "LaLa" Brooks). Though credited by Spector as singles recorded by The Crystals, "He's A Rebel" and "He's Sure The Boy I Love" actually featured Love singing lead, backed by The Blossoms. "Today I Met The Boy I'm Gonna Marry" was released as a single by Spector, and featured Love's name as the artist. She says that Spector offered ,000 for her rights to the song. And though he said it was going to be a hit, she took the money. But, in spite of that decision, she said that she has continued to have a career because people have loved hearing her sing her songs. She was also part of a trio called Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, who recorded a cover version of "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", an Oscar-winning song from the 1946 Walt Disney film, Song of the South, which got into the Top 10 in 1963. The Blossoms landed a weekly part on Shindig!, one of the top music shows of the era. They were part of the highly acclaimed Elvis Presley's '68 Comeback Special, which aired on NBC. "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is a song by Darlene Love from the 1963 holiday compilation album, A Christmas Gift for You from Philles Records. The song was written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, along with Phil Spector, with the intention of being sung by Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes. According to Love, Ronnie Spector was not able to put as much emotion into the song as needed. Instead, Love was brought into the studio to record the song, which became a big success over time and one of Love's signature tunes.

Darlene Love

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 22, 2016 7:00 pm

Partial proceeds to benefit St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.

After a powerful debut performance at The Lyric Theatre last December, vocalist and diva Darlene Love returns for another night of soaring vocals and heart-wrenching emotion. Considered “one of the greatest singers of all time” by Rolling Stone Magazine, Love is known for her vital role as a vocalist in the biggest hits of the ‘50s and ‘60s, from The Ronnette’s “Be My Baby” to Bobby Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” Darlene Love will perform some of her greatest singles, including “Christmas Baby (Please Come Home)” and “He’s a Rebel” in downtown Stuart this February.

Darlene Love got her start in show business when the young singer was in high school, forming the little-known girl-group called The Blossoms. By 1962, Love had attracted the attention of record producer Phil Spector, who immediately signed her. Darlene Love quickly became one of the most recorded vocalists in the music industry, working with major artists such as Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, and Sonny and Cher. Aside from her success as a singer, Love has also enjoyed a career as an actress, performing both on stage and in film. Notably, Love played the role of Danny Glover’s wife in all four of the Lethal Weapon movies. With roles in Grease, Carrie, and Hairspray, Darlene Love has also appeared on television programs including Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live.

Most recently, Darlene Love was featured in the Academy-award winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, which highlighted the careers of the often under-represented back-up vocalists from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. A 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Darlene Love will bring her powerhouse of a voice to The Lyric stage this season for an unforgettable, soulful performance.
