Gumbo is a combination of many things. Okra (known as gumbo in Africa) came from Africa. The roux came from France. The File’ (ground sassafras leaves) came from Native American. The crawdads, shrimp, oysters, crabs came from the ponds and gulf waters around Louisiana. The dish “Gumbo” contains the culture as well as the ingredients gathered by the Creole cooks living on the Bayou. The Creole people, like the dish, are a mixture of African American, Native American, French, Spanish, English, and Caribbean peoples. So this is more than a metaphor. This is life – a huge melting pot – a rainbow – a culture AND… it’s the future!” – Bill Wharton

at The Lyric Theatre Mar 6, 2015 7:00 pm

With hits like “Amie” and “Let Me Love You Tonight,” Pure Prairie League is one of America’s most cherished country-rock bands. Credited with bringing country rock music to a national audience in the 1970s, Pure Prairie League have continued the tradition, selling out shows across the United States to audiences young and old.

Formed in the late 1960s, Pure Prairie League got their name from the fictional temperance union referenced in the 1939 cowboy film Dodge City, starring Errol Flynn. Following their initial success in Cincinnati, Ohio, Pure Prairie League truly came to fame after the release of the single “Amie” in 1974. The group’s third album, Two Lane Highway, featured guest artists Chet Atkins, Don Felder, and Emmylou Harris among others. In 1978, Pure Prairie League welcomed singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Vince Gill to the group.

Pure Prairie League continued to enjoy success as a touring country rock band throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, despite their lack of a recording contract. Finally, in 1988, the group decided to take a break from touring altogether. Ten years later, Pure Prairie League was back again and better than ever. Although their members have changed over the years, Pure Prairie League has maintained their dedication to providing authentic country rock to audiences around the world. Their most recent member, Scott Thompson, joined the group in May of 2012. At the Lyric Theatre this season, Pure Prairie League will perform some of their greatest hits including “Amie,” “Let Me Love You Tonight,” and “That’ll Be the Day.”

Sauce Boss

at The Lyric Theatre Mar 5, 2015 7:00 pm

Come with an empty stomach and a hankering for the blues and the Sauce Boss will deliver. The one-man band and Florida legend is back again at The Lyric Theatre for a night of swamp-style slide guitar and local storytelling. On his ’53 Telecaster and 1948 Fender amp, the Sauce Boss will perform some of his most famous hits, including “Great Big Fanny” and “Let the Big Dog Eat,” while cooking up a big pot of his world-famous gumbo. Featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and The Food Network’s Extreme Cuisine, the Sauce Boss is taking on the world one mouth and two ears at a time.

The Sauce Boss has always had a love for music. The Orlando native started performing at the age of 14, playing in nightclubs and coffeehouses by the age of 17. But it wasn’t until one day in the 1970’s when he woke up one morning to find a 1933 National Steel guitar in his front yard that he really began to devote himself completely to the blues. The Sauce Boss began to draw international attention after the success of his release “Let the Big Dog Eat,” which was featured in the 1986 Jonathan Demme film Something Wild.

Since then, the Sauce Boss has become famous for more than just his musical talent. The Sauce Boss developed his signature performing style over the years, which he maintains to this day, incorporating his crowd-rousing blues music with a very different kind of skill: cooking. In every performance, the Sauce Boss cooks a mean pot of spicy gumbo for his audience onstage all while playing some good, old-fashioned blues. The Sauce Boss gained the recognition of Jimmy Buffet and Parrotheads everywhere with the release of Buffet’s 1999 hit, “I Will Play for Gumbo,” which references the Sauce Boss’ distinctive performance style. His unique mix of music and food has been featured in a number of major television shows, radio programs, and magazines, including notably Living Blues, GQ, and Gourmet Magazine.

When he’s not performing for sold-out audiences across the country, the Sauce Boss is giving back to the community. The Sauce Boss has cooked for over 190,000 people for free throughout the United States while playing his homegrown, blues-inspired set. In 2003, the Sauce Boss created the non-profit foundation “Planet Gumbo,” through which he donates performances and delicious gumbo to homeless shelters around the country. This year, the Sauce Boss returns to his Florida roots at The Lyric Theatre. As always, expect a tasty meal and a savory blues performance from the Sauce Boss.

John Hammond

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 19, 2015 7:00 pm

Grammy-nominated blues musician, John Hammond, arrives at The Lyric Theatre this February for an evening of soulful renditions of timeless blues classics. Heralded by the New York Times as a “blues legend with a voice like Robert Johnson’s,” Hammond reinterprets some of the blues’ most venerated compositions with originality and intensity. His raw, live performances showcase the musician’s genius combination of gritty vocals, slide guitar, and accompanying harmonica.

Born in New York City, John Hammond felt an immediate attraction to music, and specifically the guitar, as the son of the successful record producer John H. Hammond. With dreams of becoming a traveling blues singer, Hammond envisioned himself as a “one man, one guitar” kind of musician. Hammond, inspired by the music of Chuck Berry and Robert Johnson, quickly taught himself the guitar and continued his lessons through high school and college. By the 1960s, John Hammond was touring nationally and recording with a number of famous electric blues musicians in the New York area, including Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. In fact, John Hammond has been credited with giving major recording groups such as The Band and Jimi Hendrix wider recognition.

Now, over 50 years since his first album debut, John Hammond has released over 34 albums and continues to tour tirelessly across North America. Hammond’s work has received both popular and critical acclaim across the world. The blues veteran has been nominated for four Grammy awards and received the 1985 Grammy award for his performance of “Blues Explosion,” which featured Steve Ray Vaughan, Koko Taylor, and many others. In 2011, Hammond was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. His newest album, entitled Timeless, celebrates his artistic milestone of reaching 50 years in the music industry. The album was recorded live at one of John Hammond’s favorite venues in the world, Chan’s in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

SoLe Sanctuary is one of the more personal productions that I’m doing. It basically speaks to my respect for these dancers who I’ve been blessed to know and learn from and grow to love. Next to Normal: The Tony & Pulitzer-Prize Winning Musical

at The Lyric Theatre Jan 23, 2015 7:00 pm

Winner, 2009 Tony Awards * Winner, 2010 Pulitzer Prize * Winner,
Critics Choice for "One of the Year's Ten Best Shows"
“The best musical of the season — by a mile. It’ll pin you to your seat.” – Rolling Stone
“It is much more than a feel-good musical. It is a feel-everything musical." - The New York Times

Next to Normal, a “brave and breathtaking musical” according to The New York Times and a show that “pushes Broadway in new directions” says Rolling Stone, is a gripping and honest portrayal of one suburban household grappling with mental illness. This winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the Pulitzer Prize, was also chosen as “one of the year’s ten best shows” by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. This emotional powerhouse musical is set to a thrilling contemporary rock score, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt.

Next to Normal got its start Off-Broadway in 2008, where it was met with great reviews, winning the Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Outstanding Score. After a brief stint playing at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., Next to Normal debuted on Broadway in April of 2009. That year, the musical was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, eventually winning awards for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress. Next to Normal also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. Since its run on Broadway, the production has spread across the globe, premiering in Peru, Germany, Israel, and many more countries.

The award-winning show deals tenderly with critical contemporary issues from modern psychiatric practices to living life in suburbia. Next to Normal follows the story of a suburban mother, Diane Goodman, as she comes to terms with her own bipolar disorder and about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other amid the humor and turmoil of mental illness. Karin Leone, most recently seen as Ms. Adelaide in The Lyric’s Guys & Dolls in Concert, will reprise her role as tortured mother Diana Goodman as seen in Next to Normal at The Lyric in 2013. Under Jared Walker’s provocative direction, Next to Normal is “much more than a feel-good musical. It is a feel-everything musical." - The New York Times

Old Jews Telling Jokes

"...As funny as Old Jews Telling Jokes is (and boy, it is the funniest thing Chicago has seen in years), more than any punchline, the show also emphasizes how important humor is as a tradition. It can bind generations together; make the most horrid of circumstances a bit more tolerable; and best of all, at a time when there is so much division in our collective humanity, know that we can all still share a unifying laugh. For that reason alone, go see Old (and not so old) Jews Telling Jokes." – Show Biz Chicago
