Memories make movie night special

Friday, August 28, 2015

Your Voice News & Views/Staff writer

STUART — I recently saw an old friend and she looked great.

The Lyric Theatre had a special showing of Frank Loesser’s “Guys and Dolls,” a wonderful show and movie, and one that I had never seen on the big screen. What a difference it made! From the opening “Fugue for Tinhorns” to the closing double wedding, the screen was alive with color, the Michael Kidd choreography and that music. I had always wondered about the casting of Marlon Brando as the gambler Sky Masterson, but after watching him smolder on the big screen, I would have followed him to Havana, too.

Brando replaced Robert Alda, who had originated the role on Broadway, and Jean Simmons replaced Isabel Bigley as Sister Sarah Brown. Frank Sinatra took over the role of Nathan Detroit, but Vivian Blaine, Adelaide, remained for the movie and stole the scenes she was in.

John Loesser, Frank Loesser’s son and the Lyric’s artistic director, took to the stage after the showing to answer questions and tell stories about the show he calls his “illegitimate brother.”

“We were both born in 1950,” Loesser said. “The movie was made in 1955. I’ve spent my entire life with the show and then the film. It’s the 65th anniversary of the show and we’re both going on Medicare.”

“Guys and Dolls” was a big hit on Broadway, playing for more than 1200 performances. It was optioned to Paramount, but they elected not to make the film because writer Abe Burrows was blacklisted as a result of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s witch-hunt. It was eventually made by Samuel Goldwyn Productions and released by MGM.

“The original Sarah was supposed to be Grace Kelly,” Loesser said. “The original stage Sarah was Isabel Bigley. My father got into it with her that she was not singing it right. He slapped her. He didn’t have a temper and he was so mortified that she got a mink coat.”

Frank Sinatra brought his ego with him. He wanted to be cast as Sky Masterson and resented Brando for having what he saw as better songs. The two Franks, Loesser and Sinatra, got into over and over.

“Sinatra wanted to do what he wanted to do and not sing it as my father wrote it,” Loesser said. “He thought Brando had better songs and really wanted to be Sky.”
For his part, Brando was not crazy about Sinatra.

“During the cheesecake scene, Brando screwed it up on purpose. He knew Sinatra hated cheesecake and it took three days to film. He knew Sinatra wanted to be Sky and he rubbed it in. When he decided Sinatra had had enough cheesecake, he did the scene right.”

Loesser has seen all sorts of permutations of the beloved show.

“I have a friend in the Capitol Steps,” he said, referring to the political satire group that visits the Lyric each year. “He was directing ‘Guys and Dolls’ in Washington. He asked if I could come up and talk to the cast. When I got there, it was 12-year-olds. The Japanese are in negotiations to do an all-female version. There are also negotiations for a remake of the movie.”

Loesser said that the family was unanimous that their favorite song from the show was “My Time of Day,” a song Sky sings at 4 a.m. It was cut from the movie.

“It’s exactly Frank Loesser,” John Loesser said.

“Guys and Dolls” was by no means Frank Loesser’s only show. He wrote “The Most Happy Fella,” John Loesser’s favorite show, “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying” and 800 songs including “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

“That started as a party song,” Loesser said. “In Hollywood, you didn’t get invited to parties without a ‘bit.’ My father and mother’s bit was ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside.’ It was only done at parties. Then he sold the song for the movie, “Neptune’s Daughter,” She wouldn’t talk to him until it won the Academy Award.”

Loesser said his father refused to see the finished “Guys and Dolls.”

“He hated the process,” Loesser said. “Goldwyn was a major studio mogul and he decided how he wanted it done. We moved back to New York and my father stuck to Broadway. He was very opinionated. I can just imagine him wanting to punch Sinatra because he wouldn’t sing it right. Nobody could tell Sinatra anything. Sinatra had a huge ego. My father had an ego and he knew how his songs were meant to be sung.”

This event was so successful that Loesser is thinking of repeating it next year with the movie version of “How to Succeed.” It will be nice to see another old friend. I hope more young people will attend and hear the stories. These shows are quintessential American musicals, and for all the musical theater and dance students in the area, they are master classes.

The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. For information about the upcoming season, visit the website www.lyrictheatre.com or call the box office at (772) 286-7827.

Walter Parks "Swamp By Chandelier"

at The Lyric Theatre Oct 3, 2015 7:00 pm

A Jacksonville native, Walter Parks has never forgotten his roots. The veteran jazz and blues guitarist and former lead guitarist for Richie Havens brings a little Florida flair into every performance, creating a unique, swamp-inspired style of finger picking and raspy vocals. As the leader of the neo-southern rock group Swamp Cabbage, Parks takes traditional Southern rock riffs and injects them with a taste of the rhythm and blues, elevating his sound to a whole new level. This season at The Lyric Theatre, Walter Parks will give you a taste of North Florida in Swamp by Chandelier, a one-man guitar production inspired by the historic sounds of the Okefenokee Swamp.

Born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, Walter Parks first developed an interest in music in grade school, when he picked up the viola during music class. Eventually transitioning to the guitar, Parks started his first group in 1973, The Parental Tears Band. The band was short-lived however, as the aspiring musician chose to momentarily abandon his dream and enroll in business school at the University of Georgia. Realizing that his true passion was music, Walter Parks dropped out and returned to Jacksonville in the 1980s to start a fusion jazz band called The Sneakers. Destined for stardom, Parks won a talent contest in 1989 and moved to the Big Apple. By 1991, the guitarist had formed The Nudes with cellist Stephanie Winters. The group produced three albums and toured successfully through the United States, performing at colleges and folk festivals. Parks got his big break in 2001, when legendary singer-songwriter Richie Havens invited him to join the band.

Parks toured with Havens until 2011, when he broke with the group to form Swamp Cabbage, a band that blends blues and jazz with North Florida southern rock. The group has recorded three albums, and their fourth album Jive is due out soon. The name of the group comes from the delicacy made from the Sabal palm tree, which has been stewed by Creeks, Timucuans, Seminole and other native Floridians for centuries. Dedicated to his swampy roots, Walter Parks is inspired by the natural and cultural landscape of North Florida, incorporating the sound of Jacksonville into every performance. For his performance at The Lyric Theatre, Parks presents Swamp by Chandelier, a solo guitar performance that evokes the sounds of the Florida swamp. Swamp by Chandelier features an arrangement of Walter Parks’ own compositions as well as some of the guitarist’s favorite inspirations, including acoustic works by the legendary Richie Havens as well as some modernized interpretations of historic music from the Library of Congress archives.

YOUR VOICE NEWS /STAFF WRITER

STUART — Singer Taylor Dayne grew up in the Long Island suburbs, studying music in the local schools. After college, she released several dance singles and then caught the eye and ear of executives at Arista records. Legendary record producer Clive Davis signed her to a contract. Her song, “Tell it to My Heart,” charted and her career was on its way.

“It was pretty amazing,” the singer said. “It took off and it all began a mad rush. You can’t even imagine it. It broke in Europe and started going Number One throughout the entire world. I was doing two countries a day, stopping to make phone calls, because there were no cell phones then. It was an incredible time. I couldn’t have imagined it.”
Dayne went on to have Top Ten hits in three consecutive decades and to sell more than 75 million singles and albums. Eighteen of her singles, including “Love Will Lead You Back,” reached Billboard’s Top Ten.

Dayne also had the opportunity to tour with Michael Jackson during his “Bad” tour.

“It was the height of anything you saw and knew,” she said. “He was the greatest entertainer. He made the spectacle and insanity. There was brilliance in those tours. It was in Europe and it was huge. It was amazing to watch him and to be part of that.”

Dayne also was part of the creation of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Broadway show, “Aida.”

“I remember going in to workshops with Elton and Tim and Disney execs,” she said, “It was painstaking and long. It took so long (to bring it to the stage) that I couldn’t go on to do the musical when it started. I ended up going back.”

Dayne did eventually star in “Aida” and said the experience was very different from performing in concert.

“You’re playing a character,” she said. “You’re in complete character all the time. You’re not altering your state, the way I do. (In concert,) everything is different for each audience. Touring is an intimate moment with fans. Being in a show is being part of a whole, in character. It’s very different.”

Dayne, the mother of two, is passionate about the importance of music education in the schools.

“I’m a huge believer in why it’s so important to have music in the public schools system,” she said. “It was very good to me. My teachers changed my world. They gave us the music. In high school, I had a choir instructor, Melinda Edwards. When you had passionate musical teachers, it brought kids together into a team.”

Through the early 2000s, Dayne performed in Europe.

“The landscape of the industry changed,” she said. “I had a huge contract in Germany and then there were mergers. It was unheard of when I started. There were a lot of shifts. Now we see the music business as a different model, with downloading, streaming and free music. I am very grateful I can record and tour and creatively still put out music.”

Dayne is on tour 100-150 days a year.

“One show is never one day,” she said. “I’m on the road, baby.”

Her children, she noted, are unimpressed with her success. To them, she is mom.

Dayne is a frequent visitor to Florida as her parents live near Boynton Beach. In this show, she’ll perform her latest single, “Dreaming,’ and sing her hits.
“They will feel my journey and experience Taylor Dayne,” she said.

Taylor Dayne comes to the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, Aug. 22 at 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 and include admission to Dancin’ in the Streets. Tickets are available at the Lyric box office and are not available for purchase at the gate.

Outlaws

at The Lyric Theatre Aug 29, 2015 7:00 pm

After 20 years out of the spotlight, the beloved Southern Rock group the Outlaws are returning with brand new music, mission, and focus. Known for their three-part harmonies and triple-guitar rock, the Outlaws recorded major hits including “There Goes Another Love song,” “Knoxville Girl, and “Green Grass and High Tides.” The newly-reborn rock sextet features founding members Henry Paul and Monte Yoho, who, along with the rest of the group, are forging their place in the Southern Rock genre once again.

The Outlaws were formed in Tampa, Florida in 1972. The group’s unique sound was immediately recognized by audience members and music industry bigwigs alike, and the Outlaws soon became one of the first acts signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records. Their first three albums, The Outlaws, Lady in Waiting, and Hurry Sundown were met with widespread critical and popular acclaim, featuring such hits as “Freeborn Man” and a cover of “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky,” which reached No. 31 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. After the release of their third album, member Henry Paul left the group to form the Henry Paul Band for Atlantic Records, and later formed the multi-platinum group Blackhawk. Over the next two decades, the Outlaws struggled with frequent personnel changes, legal battles, and a lack of vision. The death of founding members Frank O’Keefe, Billy Jones, and Hughie Thomasson dealt a major blow to the spirit of the band.

But, the Outlaws always persevere. “The Florida Guitar Army” is back with a brand new studio album, It’s About Pride. The recording, four years in the making, features an impressive line-up of Southern Rock songs, including “Tomorrow’s Another Night,” “Born to be Bad,” and a particularly evocative cover of Henry Paul’s 1979 classic “So Long.” As Monte Yoho describes, this new album is about “where we’ve been, where we’re going, and why we still love to do this.” The group now features original members Yoho and Henry Paul, as well as new members Billy Crain as lead guitarist, Chris Anderson as co-lead guitarist, Dave Robbins on keyboards and vocals, and Randy Threet on bass and vocals.
