Mr. Smith Goes To Washington - Trailer

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington ~ Free Movie Summer: Aug 6 at 6pm; Aug 7 at 2pm

Tickets are available only by visiting The Lyric Theatre Box Office.

Jean Arthur, James Stewart and Claude Rains star in Frank Capra's MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, the award-winning 1939 classic about an idealistic, small town senator who heads to Washington and suddenly finds himself single-handedly battling ruthless politicians out to destroy him. When Frank Capra decided to film the novel "The Gentleman From Montana", he ran into an obstacle Director Rouben Mamoulian owned the rights to the story. Unwilling to sell, Mamoulian eventually traded the material to Columbia on the condition that he be allowed to direct Golden Boy. As Capra began working on the film, now called MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, it was suggested that Gary Copper, the star of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, take the lead. Capra selected Jimmy Stewart instead and the film solidified Stewart's movie career, garnering him his first Academy Award® nomination. Receiving a total of eleven 1939 Oscar® nominations (including Best Picture and Best Director), and winning one (Best Motion Picture Story), MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON is considered one of Capra's, Stewart's and Columbia's finest films. It also marked the end of an era. It was Capra's final film for the studio. © 1939, renewed 1967 Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Walter Parks "Swamp By Chandelier"

at The Lyric Theatre Mar 11, 2017 7:00 pm

Back again this year is jazz and blues guitarist Walter Parks in Swamp by Chandelier. The former lead guitarist for Richie Havens was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and he makes sure to incorporate a little Florida flair into every performance. With a unique, swamp-inspired style of finger picking and raspy vocals, Parks fuses traditional Southern rock riffs with the rhythm and blues, creating a unique sound of his own. In Swamp by Chandelier, Walter Parks will give you a taste of North Florida in his one-man guitar production inspired by the historic sounds of the Okefenokee Swamp.

Walter Parks was born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, where he first developed an interest in music after picking up the viola during music class. Parks soon learned that guitar was his instrument of choice, and the aspiring musician started his first group in 1973 called The Parental Tears Band. After momentarily enrolling in business school at the University of Georgia, Walter Parks realized that his true passion was music, and dropped out to return to Jacksonville in the 1980s to start a fusion jazz band called The Sneakers. Parks won a talent contest in 1989 and by 1991, the guitarist had formed The Nudes with cellist Stephanie Winters. The group produced three albums and toured successfully through the United States, performing at colleges and folk festivals. Parks shot to stardom in 2001, when legendary singer-songwriter Richie Havens invited him to join the band.

Parks toured with Havens until 2011, when he decided to return to his roots and form Swamp Cabbage, a band that blends blues and jazz with North Florida southern rock. The group has recorded three albums, and their latest album Jive was released in April 2016. The name of the group comes from the delicacy made from the Sabal palm tree, which has been stewed by Creeks, Timuquans, Seminole and other native Floridians for centuries. Always inspired by the natural and cultural landscape of North Florida, Parks makes an effort to incorporate the sound of the swamp into every performance. For his performance at The Lyric Theatre, Parks is bringing back Swamp by Chandelier, a solo guitar performance that features an arrangement of Walter Parks’ own compositions as well as some of the guitarist’s favorite inspirations, including acoustic works by the legendary Richie Havens as well as some modernized interpretations of historic music from the Library of Congress archives.

Frank Capra's classic comedy-drama about government and the American spirit. Jimmy Stewart is an idealistic senator who tries to stem the tide of graft he finds around him. Claude Rains is a corrupt colleague, Jean Arthur a jaded secretary who joins Stewart's crusade. Political heavyweights decide that Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), an obscure scoutmaster in a small town, would be the perfect dupe to fill a vacant U.S. Senate chair. Surely this naive bumpkin can be easily controlled by the senior senator (Claude Rains) from his state, a respectable and corrupted career politician. Director Frank Capra fills the movie with Smith's wide-eyed wonder at the glories of Washington, all of which ring false for his cynical secretary (Jean Arthur), who doesn't believe for a minute this rube could be for real. But he is. Capra was repeating the formula of a previous film, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, but this one is even sharper; Stewart and Arthur are brilliant, and the former cowboy star Harry Carey lends a warm presence to the role of the vice president. Bright, funny, and beautifully paced, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is Capra's ode to the power of innocence--an idea so potent that present-day audiences may find themselves wishing for a new Mr. Smith in Congress. The 1939 Congress was none too thrilled about the film's depiction of their august body, denouncing it as a caricature; but even today, Capra's jibes about vested interests and political machines look as accurate as ever.

Major Ben Marco is an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. He served valiantly as a captain in the Korean war and his Sergeant, Raymond Shaw, even won the Medal of Honor. Marco has a major problem however: he has a recurring nightmare, one where two members of his squad are killed by Shaw. He's put on indefinite sick leave and visits Shaw in New York. Shaw for his part has established himself well, despite the misgivings of his domineering mother, Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin. She is a red-baiter, accusing anyone who disagrees with her right-wing reactionary views of being a Communist. Raymond hates her, not only for how she's treated him but equally because of his step-father, the ineffectual U.S. Senator John Iselin, who is intent on seeking higher office. When Marco learns that others in his Korean War unit have nightmares similar to his own, he realizes that something happened to all of them in Korea and that Raymond Shaw is the focal point. The Mystical Arts of Tibet “Sacred Music Sacred Dance”

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 10, 2017 7:00 pm

In the Mystical Arts of Tibet, multiphonic singers from Tibet's famous Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform sacred temple music and enchanting masked dances as part of their multi-national tour for World Healing. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and critically acclaimed for their sold out performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Mystical Arts of Tibet singers perform a rare style of vocals in which the monks intone three notes of one chord simultaneously.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet is co-produced by Richard Gere Productions and the Drepung Loseling Institue, which is the North American seat of the Drepung Loseling Monastery. The talented vocalists have performed all over the world, including appearing with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Patti Smith, and the Beastie Boys among others. Two of the monks' recordings have reached the top 10 spot on the New Age charts, and their most recent recording combined the Gethsemani Schola's Gregorian chant singing with the Tibetan multiphonic singing. The Drepung Loseling monks have also been featured on the Golden Globe-nominated sountrack for the film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt, and have performed with Philip Glass at Lincoln Center during Glass' presentation of his award-winning score for Martin Scorcese's film Kundun.

Accompanying the Mystical Arts of Tibet's multiphonic singing are elaborate traditional costumes and associated masked dances, including the Dance of the Sacred Snow Lion. An intensely unique and powerful performance, the Mystical Arts of Tibet's performance has three purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India. Celebrate the beautiful tradition of Tibetan multiphonic singing and dance this season at The Lyric Theatre with the Mystical Arts of Tibet “Sacred Music Sacred Dance.”

3 Redneck Tenors "Shut Up and Sing!"

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 24, 2017 7:00 pm

Everyone’s favorite mulleted trio is back again this year; it’s 3 Redneck Tenors: Shut Up and Sing. A new and unique breed of tenor, the 3 Redneck Tenors aren’t afraid to poke a little fun at themselves, combining musical comedy with classically trained vocalists to make a Duck Dynasty meets Carnegie Hall combination.

3 Redneck Tenors features Matthew Lord, Blake Davidson, and Jonathan Fruge, with music arranged by the award-winning composer Craig Bohmler. Featuring music ranging from country, to gospel, Broadway, and classical, the group is widely celebrated for their hilarious comedy routines blended seamlessly with professional musical numbers. 3 Redneck Tenors is written by the tenor and opera veteran Matthew Lord.

The three tenors are as classically trained as they are funny. Native Californian, Matthew Lord, boasts an extensive repertoire, from 18th century works to contemporary composers, and the tenor has performed in nearly every major opera house in America, including the San Francisco Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Tenor Blake Davidson has performed in solo concerts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Tokyo Opera House. Davidson won the American Repertoire Award at the Bellini Competition in Sicily and received a nomination for the Leon Rabin Best Actor in a Musical Award. Jonathan Fruge has performed with the New York City Chamber Orchestra and has over 20 leading roles under his belt, including the role of Col. Hugh Pickering in My Fair Lady. Despite their proper training and classical sensibilities, the three men love to dress up as three mullet-wearing southern boys and make audiences across the country laugh.

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington - Trailer
