DeadPhish Orchestra

at The Lyric Theatre Mar 17, 2017 8:00 pm

The music of The Grateful Dead and Phish
merged into one unique concert experience,
featuring some of your favorite songs from Bertha to Harry Hood

Unlike any jam band you've seen before, the DeadPhish Orchestra masterfully merge the music of The Grateful Dead and Phish into one unique concert experience. Through carefully crafted segues, the DeadPhish Orchestra take on the folksy, bluesy sounds of the Grateful Dead and the aggressive funkiness of Phish and create a sound all their own. This season at The Lyric Theatre, the Colorado quartet will play some of your favorite songs from Bertha to Harry Hood and more.

What began as a group of friends playing some of their favorite Phish songs together in Colorado developed into one of the most unique tribute bands active today. The DeadPhish Orchestra has toured across the country, from Redwood City, California to Boca Raton. The talented quartet has welcomed a number of guest musicians to perform with them, including members of the String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, and the Heavy Pets. Their cleverly designed performances and palpable passion for music allow audiences to experience all the best of jam music in one show.

Featuring Paul Murin on guitar, Ted Tilton on keyboards, Brian Adams on bass, and Chris Sheldon on drums, the DeadPhish Orchestra will perform some of the greatest hits from the Grateful Dead and Phish on The Lyric stage this season. With set lists that transition seamlessly between artists, such as Divided Sky > Morning Dew > Divided Sky, the DeadPhish Orchestra celebrate the spontaneity and improvisation that makes jam music so memorable.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about The Supreme Court: A Conversation with Susan Low Bloch

at The Lyric Theatre Mar 21, 2017 7:00 pm

Think the Supreme Court is boring? Think again! Join Professor Susan Low Bloch in an evening of fun, facts and fancy about the U.S. Supreme Court’s past, present, and future. Experience the terror of the woman who, as his young law clerk, told Justice Thurgood Marshall his draft opinion was wrong! Hear the Justice’s unpublished – and unexpurgated – response! Consider the plight of lost tourists who accidentally entered the Justice’s private elevator, turned to Justice Marshall and said, “Third floor, please!” Understand why Justice Antonin Scalia guest lectured at Professor Bloch’s class for 30 years!

Leading this whirlwind tour through the highest court in the land is Professor Susan Low Bloch, professor of law at Georgetown Law Center where she teaches Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, and a seminar on the Supreme Court. A summa cum laude graduate of Smith College and University of Michigan Law School, Professor Bloch is the author of numerous articles in the areas of constitutional and administrative law and is the co-author of Inside the Supreme Court: The Institution and Its Procedures. Following her graduation from law school, Professor Bloch served as law clerk to Judge Spottswood Robinson on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and for Thurgood Marshall on the United States Supreme Court.

Joining Professor Bloch is her husband Richard Bloch, who specializes in neutral arbitration in commercial and labor-management disputes. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Michigan Law School (J.D.) and School of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Mr. Bloch has served on the faculties of the University of Michigan and the University of Detroit, as well as on the adjunct faculty of the Georgetown University Law Center.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear all the surprising stories and little-known facts about the “Court of last resort!” You’ll have the chance to ask any burning questions you might have like: “Will the Court be changing? (Do liberals live forever?)” or “What happens if or when Roe v. Wade disappears?” and “Why is the Supreme Court NOT the highest court in the land?” All will be revealed in Everything You Wanted to Know about The Supreme Court: A Conversation with Susan Low Bloch.

Pump Boys and Dinettes

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 8, 2017 4:00 pm

On February 4, 1982 the friendliest, happiest show in town opened on Broadway at the Princess Theatre. There had been nothing like it before and audiences and critics fell in love with its down-home, earthy celebration of friendship and the simple things in life. With songs that celebrated the gifts of friendship, vacations, hard work, fishing, and color TV, Pump Boys and Dinettes garnered three Tony Award nominations and two Drama Desk Award nominations.

Set in a gas station and diner, the “Double Cupp Diner,” on Highway 57 somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, NC, the musical stars four gas station attendants (L.M., Jackson, Jim, and Eddie) and two waitresses (Prudie and Rhetta Cupp) who sing and play all manor of instruments including kitchen utensils. The music is a quirky, highly imaginative blend of country, rock-a-billy, swing, rock and roll and jazz. One selection, “The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine”, reached number 67 on the Hot Country Songs charts.

Pump Boys and Dinettes was created by two friends, Jim Wann and Mark Hardwick who experimented with the concept while playing five nights a week at a New York steakhouse. The idea took off from there and with the help of contributors and fellow performers John Foley, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, and John Schimmel, they made their way from Off-Broadway to the bright lights of Broadway and on to London’s West End.

In this national tour, Pump Boys and Dinettes is directed by Curt Wollan, with choreography by Wendy Short Hays. Featuring wacky musical numbers with genres as varied as swing, rock-a-billy, jazz, and country, Pump Boys and Dinettes is the catchiest musical you’ll see all year.
