Merry Bronxmas with the Bronx Wanderers
Dec 15, 2014 6:00 pm We’re welcoming our favorite New York vocal ensemble back again this season to put the Bronx back in Christmas. Famous for their charming covers of popular classics and romantic ballads of the 50s and 60s, The Bronx Wanderers will take their talents to a whole new level this holiday season with a brand-new performance featuring your favorite seasonal songs. Don’t miss Yo’ Vinny and the gang take on Christmas classics from “Jingle Bells” to “Winter Wonderland.” The Bronx Wanderers got their start as a father-son Dion tribute band, later expanding into the seven piece group that features Yo’ Vinny and sons, Vinny “The Kid” and Nicky “Stix”, saxophonist Jay Leslie, bassist Doug Ryniker, guitarist Joe Bonasorte and Keyboards and extra saxophone Joe Bari. The Wanderers have wooed audiences around the country with their contemporary interpretations of mid-20th century crooners and doo-wop ensembles, from the Four Seasons to Dion and the Belmonts. More than just your average cover band, The Bronx Wanderers put a new twist on classic oldies, bringing a contemporary flair to your favorite doo-wop hits and more. The Wanderers have covered a variety of hits from nearly every decade, including famous songs by The Bee Gees, Turtles and Paul Revere & The Raiders. And they don’t stop there! Recently, Yo’ Vinny and the gang have brought audiences to their feet with their high energy cover of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” In Merry Bronxmas with The Bronx Wanderers, the quintet will bring the same contemporary twist they bring to oldies to Christmas classics. Featuring songs such as “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Run Rudolph Run,” the Bronx Wanderers’ holiday performance offers a fresh new take on the most beloved seasonal tunes.

The history of the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China is a very interesting one. Founded during the Cold War, the acrobatic troupe was unwelcome in the United States until 1972, when President Nixon invited the group to the White House. This was a major moment in the history of the relationship between China and the United States, and the company is credited in part with re-establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries at a critical period in history. Now, over four decades later, the National Acrobats are back in the United States for their 2014 North American tour.
Under the direction of Mr. An Ning, the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China have set themselves apart from the thousands of other acrobat troupes around the world due to their professionalism and tireless innovation. Over the years, more than 200 artists from the acrobatic company have won gold and silver awards at national and international competitions as well as circus festivals. In 2012, five troupes and teams traveled to Turkey, Taiwan, Singapore, and Germany, thrilling audiences of every nationality with their breath-taking original stunts. The National Acrobats have developed a number of impressive productions, including Mirage, Pirates!, and Sun Birds. This performance, entitled Cirque Peking, is a culmination of over 60 years of practice and dedication to the acrobatic craft. For their North American tour, the company has developed an entirely new production, featuring incredible tricks such as “Chinese Poles in Shaolin Style” and “Diving through Moving Hoops.”

La Vie en Rose ~ Art Cinema
Drama

French/PG-13/136 min.
Writer/director Olivier Dahan (Crimson Rivers II) helmed La Vie en Rose, the screen biopic of tragic French songstress Edith Piaf. Marion Cotillard portrays Piaf, the superstar once raised as a young girl by her grandmother in a Normandy bordello, then discovered on a French street corner -- as a complete unknown -- by cabaret proprietor Louis Leplée (Gérard Depardieu). The film segues breezily between various episodes from Piaf's life -- such as her lover, French boxer Marcel Cerdan's (Jean-Pierre Martins) championship bout in mid-'40s New York; her period in Hollywood during the '50s; Piaf's abandonment as a young girl by her contortionist father (and earlier by her mother, a street singer); her brushes with the law as an adult; and her 1951 car accident and subsequent morphine addiction that caused her to age well beyond her years and left her barely mobile; and, through it all, her ability (like Billie Holiday) to funnel personal tragedy and emotional struggles into her vocalizations -- dazzling audiences in the process.
"Marion Cotillard, lip-syncing Piaf's songs and digging into her soul with gale-force urgency, gives a performance for the ages". - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
"Marion Cotillard delivers a tour de force as legendary singer Édith Piaf". - Lou Lumenick, New York Post
"It's the role of an actress' lifetime, and Marion Cotillard pretty much knocks it out of the park". - Jack Mathews, New York Daily News
