Walter Parks "Swamp By Chandelier"
at The Lyric Theatre Oct 3, 2015 7:00 pm
A Jacksonville native, Walter Parks has never forgotten his roots. The veteran jazz and blues guitarist and former lead guitarist for Richie Havens brings a little Florida flair into every performance, creating a unique, swamp-inspired style of finger picking and raspy vocals. As the leader of the neo-southern rock group Swamp Cabbage, Parks takes traditional Southern rock riffs and injects them with a taste of the rhythm and blues, elevating his sound to a whole new level. This season at The Lyric Theatre, Walter Parks will give you a taste of North Florida in Swamp by Chandelier, a one-man guitar production inspired by the historic sounds of the Okefenokee Swamp.
Born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, Walter Parks first developed an interest in music in grade school, when he picked up the viola during music class. Eventually transitioning to the guitar, Parks started his first group in 1973, The Parental Tears Band. The band was short-lived however, as the aspiring musician chose to momentarily abandon his dream and enroll in business school at the University of Georgia. Realizing that his true passion was music, Walter Parks dropped out and returned to Jacksonville in the 1980s to start a fusion jazz band called The Sneakers. Destined for stardom, Parks won a talent contest in 1989 and moved to the Big Apple. By 1991, the guitarist had formed The Nudes with cellist Stephanie Winters. The group produced three albums and toured successfully through the United States, performing at colleges and folk festivals. Parks got his big break in 2001, when legendary singer-songwriter Richie Havens invited him to join the band.
Parks toured with Havens until 2011, when he broke with the group to form Swamp Cabbage, a band that blends blues and jazz with North Florida southern rock. The group has recorded three albums, and their fourth album Jive is due out soon. The name of the group comes from the delicacy made from the Sabal palm tree, which has been stewed by Creeks, Timucuans, Seminole and other native Floridians for centuries. Dedicated to his swampy roots, Walter Parks is inspired by the natural and cultural landscape of North Florida, incorporating the sound of Jacksonville into every performance. For his performance at The Lyric Theatre, Parks presents Swamp by Chandelier, a solo guitar performance that evokes the sounds of the Florida swamp. Swamp by Chandelier features an arrangement of Walter Parks’ own compositions as well as some of the guitarist’s favorite inspirations, including acoustic works by the legendary Richie Havens as well as some modernized interpretations of historic music from the Library of Congress archives.

New family musical at Lyric

STUART — The best way to introduce young audiences to the delights of live theater is to take them to see live theater. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of opportunities in the area for family-friendly, high-quality entertainment.
Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach has created Riverside Theatricals, a division of the theater that will focus on the creation of new musicals. The first, “Poodleful, A K9 Mystery Musical,” will be presented at the Lyric Theatre in StuartSept. 25.
The show, written by Ken Clifton and DJ Salisbury, is based on the book “Pansy at the Palace” by Cynthia Bardes. It follows the adventures of Pansy the poodle and her “person,” Avery, at the glamourous Palace Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Jon Moses, the Riverside’s managing director and chief operating officer, said that it is a long-standing desire of Riverside Theatre CEO Allen Cornell and musical director Clifton to create new works.
“We’re starting with children’s productions,” Moses said. “It’s a little niche of the market we felt was underserved. We wanted to help beef up the amount of entertainment for younger families.”
The show begins with Pansy as a “poodle in waiting,” looking for a person to adopt her. When Avery comes long, the two are very happy. Then a mysterious theft happens that threatens to close the hotel. Pansy helps solve the mystery.
For Moses and the creative team, choosing this particular production was a matter of timing.
“We just so happened to have the book in front of us,” Moses said. The author, Cynthia Bardes, had dropped off a copy of the book to Allen. She’s local and accessible. When you’re looking for new works, there are things in the public domain and those where you have to negotiate permission with the author. She’s fond of the theater and we were able to quickly contact her and negotiate it. She was thrilled we were using her book to launch a new project.”
The cast of six for the show is made up of young professionals.
“They’re all fresh out of college,” Moses said. “They are with us for the entire year. The show opens at the Riverside Sept. 18 and at the Lyric Sept. 25. We have an engagement in Gainesville Nov. 12 at the Florida Theatre Conference. We’re hoping to pick up additional dates. All of the actors are also in one show or another in the two Main Stage shows. It’s an incredible opportunity for young performers.”
Moses said a second production is in the works. While he wasn’t ready to give out details, he said it would be for children and families.
“You have to start at a young age,” he said. “That’s why we’re starting the way we are starting. We’re building the audiences for tomorrow by getting them accustomed to the theater.
“Poodleful” will be presented at the Lyric Theatre Sept. 25. Tickets are $15. Visit the website www.lyrictheatre.com or call the box office at (772) 286-7827.

Simon & Garfunkel - April Come She Will (Live In New York 1981)
Simon & Garfunkel Live in Central Park....
April come she will
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain
May she will stay
Resting in my arms again
June she'll change her tune
In restless walks she'll prowl the night
July she will fly
And give no warning to her flight
August die she must
The autumn winds blow chilly and cold
September I remember
A love once new has now grown old

Encourage Creativity: Teach the Arts (documentary)
Using their own words, three ordinary children with an extraordinary commitment demonstrate the power of art in their everyday lives. Ian (10 yrs old) suffers attention and learning challenges so he uses art to quell anxiety before gymnastics competitions and focus before big tests. Jordyn (8 yrs old) used dance and music to put an end to being bullied at school, make new friends, and deal with the feelings that come with growing up. Andrew (14 yrs old) is home-schooled, a Tae Kwon Do black belt, and has a composer fellowship with LA Philharmonic. Various educators discuss the profound impact the arts have on young people, from engagement to graduation, and employment to self-expression.

Live in Central Park [REVISITED]: Simon and Garfunkel
at The Lyric Theatre Dec 17, 2015 7:00 pm
Relive one of the largest and most memorable concerts in history this season at The Lyric Theatre with Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel. Vocalist Lee Lessack and singer-songwriter Johnny Rodgers bring the classic set list to life, revisiting the biggest hits of the greatest folk rock duo of all time. From “Sound of Silence” to “Mrs. Robinson,” Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel showcases two international vocal talents as they recreate the legendary, original 1981 reunion concert that brought Simon and Garfunkel back together again.
In September of 1981, after over ten years of separation, Simon and Garfunkel came together for an unforgettable reunion concert in Central Park. The concert was intended to raise funds for the restoration of the park, which had fallen into disrepair. Although the city had expected around 300,000 people to attend, the concert quickly surpassed all expectations, attracting over 500,000 people, setting the record as the 7th largest concert attendance in history. Part of a larger series that celebrates iconic concert series from New York City’s Central Park, Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel accurately and honestly recreates the original 21-song set list, even featuring two songs not included on the equally successful 1982 live album.
Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel features internationally renowned artists Lee Lessack and Johnny Rodgers. A native of Philadelphia and alum of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Lee Lessack is known for his distinct cabaret vocal style. The baritone has released five albums over his career, touring extensively in the United States and across Europe to sold-out audiences. His recording “In Good Company” earned a MAC and Bistro Award for Best Recording of the Year and his latest concert, an homage to the Great French Songbook called Chanteur, has received widespread critical acclaim. Lessack also tours with the successful vocal group 3 Men and a Baby…Grand! The versatile Johnny Rodgers is a singer-songwriter, pianist, Broadway star, and a celebrated recording artist. Noted by the New York Times’ Stephen Holden as having “elements of Billy Joel, Peter Allen, and Johnny Mercer,” Rodgers has performed in venues across the country from New York City’s hottest clubs to the stage at Lincoln Center. The vocalist has won multiple contests, including the Billboard and Great American Songbook contests, and won the ASCAP Foundation Award for Songwriting.
In Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel, Lee Lessack and Johnny Rodgers will cover some of the legendary folk rock duo’s greatest hits, including “The Boxer” and “Scarborough Fair.” The performance will also include Simon and Garfunkel covers performed in the original Central Park concert, such as the Everly Brother’s “Wake Up Little Susie.” Don’t miss the chance to revisit the magic of Simon and Garfunkel this season at The Lyric Theatre.
