Drama
PG-13 | 92 min | English
Forty years ago, artist Alex Carver (Morgan Freeman) bought a run-down apartment in a sketchy part of Brooklyn with his wife, schoolteacher Ruth (Diane Keaton). Today, their neighborhood is now very hip and their apartment worth a small fortune. The now- retired Ruth and Alex haven’t changed – they are still as much in love as ever. But they have let Ruth’s niece Lily (Cynthia Nixon), a real estate agent, list their property to see what the market might bear.
On the eve of their open house, the Brooklyn Bridge is rumored to be under a terrorist attack, sending the media into a frenzy and people’s attitudes about living in New York. Closer to home, Dorothy, the Carver’s beloved dog, is suddenly having trouble walking.
While Dorothy is having expensive treatment at the vet, Ruth convinces Alex to go apartment hunting in Manhattan, where they miraculously come across an ideal place they might actually be able to afford. As the world around them seems to mirror their own chaos and confusion, Ruth and Alex realize the same bond of love that has kept them together all these years will allow them to see their way through this crazy weekend as well.

"A thoroughly warm, whimsical, watchable onscreen couple." - Variety
"What a pleasure to see a simple, finely tuned dramedy about real adults with real emotions in a real-life situation." - Los Angeles Times

Art Cinema returns to Lyric

Shelley Koppel
Staff writer/Your Voice News

MARTIN COUNTY — Art Cinema has returned to the Lyric Theatre. The film series, which was discontinued last summer while the theater was undergoing renovations, is now in full swing. For the next several weeks, the focus is on the history of rock, with three rock documentaries.

“The Wrecking Crew” will air June 18 at 5 and 8 p.m. The 95-minute film tells the story of The Wrecking Crew, a group of studio musicians in the 1960s and 1970s, who provided the sound for six consecutive Grammy Awards for Record of the Year. They played for Nat King Cole. Frank and Nancy Sinatra, the Monkees, the Byrds and the Beach Boys and were considered the epitome of the “West Coast Sound.” The documentary was produced and directed by Danny Tedesco, son of the Wreckng Crew’s guitarist, Tommy Tedesco.

On June 25, the documentary “Keep on Keepin’ On,” will be shown at 5 and 8 p.m. The film was shot over five years by Al Hicks, and tells the story of 93-year-old jazz legend, trumpeter Clark Terry. Terry, a mentor to Duke Ellington, had the distinction of playing in both Count Basie’s and Ellington’s bands. In the 1960s, he was the first African-American staff musician at NBC for “The Tonight Show.”

The film focuses on Terry’s friendship with Justin Kauflin, a blind, 23-year-old piano prodigy who suffers from acute stage fright. As Kauflin prepares for a jazz competition, Terry’s health suffers and the two confront overwhelming challenges.

Kauflin’s work is heard on the score and it has anecdotes from Quincy Jones, who was mentored by Terry and produced the film. Filmmaker Hicks was also a student of Terry’s and the film is his tribute to his teacher.

The final of the three rockumentaries is “Ain’t In it for my Health: A Film about Levon Helm.” The film will air July 2 at 5 and 8 p.m. It features the drummer and vocalist for The Band, and shows him in his home in Woodstock, N.Y., as he is in the midst of making his first studio album in 25 years.

The film was shot over a two-year period and focuses on the four-time Grammy winner and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as he recorded the 2007 album, “Dirt Farmer.” This was his comeback after throat cancer in 1998 took away his singing voice. When the cancer went into remission, his voice returned and “Dirt Farmer” earned a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album.

Art Cinema is a continuing series of art films, documentaries, independent films and hard-to-find international cinema. Tickets for showings are $10. The Lyric Film Society makes these films possible, and Film Society memberships are available for $100 annually. These entitle members to discounted tickets at $6. Supporting memberships at $250 provide one free ticket to all films.

The Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, presents Art Cinema on selected dates. For more information, visit the website,www.lyrictheatre.com or call (772) 286-7827.

The April 9 show features elaborate imagery and costumes.

John Loesser, who recently gave up day-to-day operations of the theater to become its artistic director, spoke about the new season.
“I have some very cool people coming,” he said, “Jeffrey Tambor is an amazing actor. My favorite show is “The Return of the Dukes of Hazzard Christmas Show.” Both are good singers. They can sing and we’re going retro. We’ll get a great show out of Wopat and Schneider.”

Loesser also mentioned Faith Prince, Darlene Love and…the Wellington Ukulele Orchestra from New Zealand.

“I had wanted to do it for years,” he said. “They’re very funny, and where else can you see an entire ukulele orchestra?”

After this past season’s success with “The Rabbi and the Italian,” Loesser put together “The Jew, the Old Jew, and the Guy from Jersey.”
“They’re very good comedians,” he said, “People love comedy shows. They do clean stand-up. It’s not that easy to find, but there’s a demand for it. It’s your basic Bob Hope-type humor.”

There are returning favorites, including a Peter White Christmas with Rick Braun and Mindi Abair.

“They’ve been here eight straight years,” he said. “They’re the best that are out there. It’s become a social event at the Lyric.

The Capitol Steps will be returning, as will Lee Greenwood, the latter for the first time in nine years.

Loesser is enjoying his new role. “This allows me to not worry so much about day-to-day operations,” he said. “I’ll add new things and do expanded educational outreach. I may even produce a show or two. It frees me up to think more creatively. I’m still doing community relations and raising money for the theater. It frees me up to look at areas we haven’t developed.”

Loesser noted that the season’s list is by no means complete. New shows will be announced throughout the summer.

The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. For more information, visit the website www.lyrictheatre.com or call(772) 286-7827.

From first rehearsal to world premiere, BALLET 422 takes us backstage at New York City Ballet when 25-year-old Justin Peck, a young up-and-coming choreographer, is commissioned to create a new ballet for the Company’s 2013 Winter Season. With unprecedented access to an elite world, BALLET 422 illuminates the process behind the creation of a single ballet within the ongoing cycle of work at one of the world’s great ballet companies. The film follows Peck as he collaborates with musicians, lighting designers, costume designers and his fellow dancers to create Paz de la Jolla, NYCB’s 422nd new ballet. BALLET 422 is an unembellished vérité portrait of a process that has never before been documented at New York City Ballet in its entirety.

Shortly after music producing legend Clive Davis signed the pop vocalist in the 1980s, Dayne’s career took off with the release of her first two albums, Tell It to My Heart and Can’t Fight Fate. After taking a break from the music industry to raise her children, Taylor Dayne returned with a bang with the release of her album Satisfied in 2008. The lead single “Beautiful” from the album reached #1 on international dance charts, marking the 17th time that Dayne would produce a Top 10 single. In addition to her talents as a singer, Taylor Dayne is also an accomplished film and stage actress. She appeared in the 1994 film Love Affair starring Warren Beatty and starred in Elton John’s award-winning Broadway production of the opera Aida.
