“I love to do stand-up, I really enjoy it. There’s no money in it, but I just do it because it’s a wonderful proving ground. It’s a laboratory for comics to work out. I look forward to doing it.” Steve Solomon

A Darlene Love Christmas – “Love For The Holidays”
Dec 8, 2014 7:00 pm In her Lyric debut performance, Darlene Love will ring in the Christmas season with a little Love for the Holidays. Love, with her annual performance of her blockbuster hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on the Late Show with David Letterman and has become a holiday staple for national audiences. Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" first on its list of The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs, saying that "nobody can match Love's emotion and sheer vocal power." Perhaps most famous for her #1 single, “He’s a Rebel,” Darlene Love has dominated the music industry for over 50 years as both a back-up singer and a solo artist. This holiday season, Ms. Love will light up The Lyric stage with her soulful renditions of seasonal favorites. Called “one of the greatest singers of all time” by the Rolling Stones, Darlene Love began performing as early as high school in an obscure girl-group called The Blossoms. Picked up in 1962 by producing legend Phil Spector, Love quickly became one of the most popular vocalists in the industry, working with some of the greatest performers of the 50s and 60s, including Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, and Sonny and Cher. Darlene Love’s powerful voice can be heard in many of the biggest hits of the time period, such as The Ronette’s “Be My Baby” and Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” Darlene Love has also appeared in a number of acting roles on stage and in major motion pictures and television. Love played the role of Danny Glover’s wife in the four Lethal Weapon movies. Additionally, Love performed in the Broadway musicals Grease, Carrie, and Hairspray. The famous vocalist has also appeared numerous times on Late Night with David Letterman, as well as Saturday Night Live. Most recently, Darlene Love was featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, which chronicled the careers of some of the most 1960s and 70s, which ran as part of The Lyric’s most recent Art Cinema Series.

The history of the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China is a very interesting one. Founded during the Cold War, the acrobatic troupe was unwelcome in the United States until 1972, when President Nixon invited the group to the White House. This was a major moment in the history of the relationship between China and the United States, and the company is credited in part with re-establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries at a critical period in history. Now, over four decades later, the National Acrobats are back in the United States for their 2014 North American tour.
Under the direction of Mr. An Ning, the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China have set themselves apart from the thousands of other acrobat troupes around the world due to their professionalism and tireless innovation. Over the years, more than 200 artists from the acrobatic company have won gold and silver awards at national and international competitions as well as circus festivals. In 2012, five troupes and teams traveled to Turkey, Taiwan, Singapore, and Germany, thrilling audiences of every nationality with their breath-taking original stunts. The National Acrobats have developed a number of impressive productions, including Mirage, Pirates!, and Sun Birds. This performance, entitled Cirque Peking, is a culmination of over 60 years of practice and dedication to the acrobatic craft. For their North American tour, the company has developed an entirely new production, featuring incredible tricks such as “Chinese Poles in Shaolin Style” and “Diving through Moving Hoops.”
