Former White House chef to share stories at Lyric Theatre about cooking for presidents

By Kevin Canessa
Posted January 28, 2014 at 6:15 p.m.

Former White House Chef John Moeller remembers quite well Sept. 11, 2001. It was supposed the be the day of the annual Congressional Picnic on the White House Lawn.

And then, of course, everything changed.

“We were preparing things in the kitchen and there were 15 of us cooking that day,” Moeller said. “Normally there are just five of us in the kitchen, but we needed many more people because of the crowd. Someone came in and told us the first tower had been hit. And a few minutes later, I went over to the small TV in the storage room just as the second plane hit. We knew it was a terrorist attack at that moment.

“Then, not too much later, the chief usher came in and told us, ‘The Pentagon just got hit. Let’s go. Secure the food — we’re getting out of here.’ ”

Hours later, Moeller finally made it home after walking most of the way to his apartment in Washington, D.C.

This is one of many stories about being a chef in the White House that Moeller will share Feb. 4 when he’s a special guest at The Lyric Theatre in Stuart.

During “A Conversation With John Moeller,” the man who cooked for presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and their families from 1992 to 2005, will tell what it was like to be the cook for some of the world’s most influential people and leaders.

“I suppose I was just at the right place at the right time to be hired,” said Moeller, a native of Lancaster, Pa. “I’d been working at a French restaurant in 1987 in D.C., and one night, another chef invited me to go to the Mayflower Hotel with him for a gathering of other French chefs. From there, we remained in touch, he became a sous chef at the White House, and when he was promoted, he hired me to replace him as a sous chef.”

Of the presidents he served, he said the elder Bush had the most sophisticated tastes. And he also admitted the pretzel the younger Bush choked on came from him.

“It was a Lancaster pretzel that the other presidents enjoyed, so I figured I’d keep them around,” Moeller said. “So yes, those pretzels included the one he choked on.”

Moeller also will offer an interactive cooking demonstration and five-course meal the next day at In the Kitchen in Tequesta based on meals he’s prepared at the White House.

Hair

Nearly 50 years later, Hair is still relevant today. The defining rock musical, Hair swept Broadway with its revolutionary condemnation of the Vietnam War and shocked audiences with brash depictions of sexuality, drug use, and profanity. A celebration of youth and an exploration for peace, Hair, the musical, remains a critically relevant commentary on American society.

Debuting on Broadway in 1968, Hair follows the lives of a group of politically active hippies living a bohemian life in the hustle and bustle of New York City, struggling to avoid the draft and to find love in the meantime. A search for peace, truth, and love, Hair gave a voice to the Baby Boomers of the 1960s and 70s. Coining popular songs such as “Aquarius,” “Let the Sun Shine In,” and “Good Morning, Starshine,” Hair was a perfect vocal outlet for a discouraged generation searching for answers.

Nowadays, people are still searching and Hair, the musical, is still providing generations of young adults with an outlet for societal frustrations. Nominated for 10 Tony Awards over the past five decades, Hair finally won Best Revival of a Musical in 2009, proving the increasing relevance of an expression of rebellion and sexual liberation. Now revived all over the world in many forms and venues, Hair speaks to more than just an American population, capturing audiences with its daring statements and catchy lyrics.

For over two decades, Grammy Award-winning artist Terrance Simien, 8th generation Louisiana Creole, has been shattering myths about what indigenous Creole Zydeco music is – and is not.  His eclectic fusion of Zydeco will take you on a multi-cultural musical tour of the world. Simien writes from a decidedly different perspective than other Zydeco artists, drawing on a wide range of influences that include not only Zydeco pioneers, but also popular folk and soul artists, such as Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, and Simon and Garfunkel.  He has shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Dr. John, the Dave Matthews Band and Los Lobos, to name a few.

Simien is one of the most respected and internationally recognized artists in roots music today.  Together with his Zydeco Experience Band, he has taken Zydeco to a new level of recognition and popularity, creating a fusion of sound like no other.  Simien has continued to raise the standard for the genre by establishing himself as a formidable songwriter and an accomplished singer (frequently evoking comparisons with Aaron Neville and Sam Cooke).

John Pizzarelli Quartet

Over his career, John Pizzarelli has revitalized jazz, bringing a refreshing, modern twist to the genre while staying true to its roots. Called “madly creative” by the LA Times, the guitarist and singer is not afraid to blend styles, mixing pop and Latin styles with a jazzy flair, making him one of the most interesting contemporary artists today. Since his success with the Boston Pops, John Pizzarelli has skyrocketed into fame, hailed for his finely crafted performances and memorable albums.

John Pizzarelli first started playing guitar at the age of six, and he never looked back. An incredibly gifted, and not to mention, lucky teenager, John had the honor of performing with some of the greatest names in American music, including Benny Goodman, Les Paul, and Zoot Sims. As a rising musician, John opened for the likes of Dave Brubeck, Rosemary Clooney, and even had the opportunity to open for Frank Sinatra during his 1993 international tour. With these kinds of incredible experiences under his belt, John Pizzarelli developed his own signature style. The aspiring guitarist quickly displayed his remarkable ability to incorporate a variety of styles and create something decidedly unique. Over the years, John has recorded prolifically, producing albums including a range of musical styles from ballads to holiday favorites.

Despite his range of influences, John Pizzarelli names Nat King Cole as his greatest hero, even dedicating two of his albums to the legendary musician. However, that hasn’t stopped the contemporary jazz star from having fun with the genre of jazz. In 2004, Pizzarelli produced a CD entitled Bossa Nova featuring the clever and inspired blending of Brazilian musical stylings and traditional jazz. His latest album, Double Exposure, is a celebration of pop music, reinvigorated with a splash of jazz.

Gaelic Storm

The winds will be blowing again this January at The Lyric Theatre when Gaelic Storm returns to the stage. With their blend of animated instrumentals, lyrical honesty, and raw Celtic spirit, the pop-folk band has attracted a throng of devoted fans after their appearance in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. With a high-energy group like Gaelic Storm, there’s nothing like experiencing them live.

In 1996, Patrick Murphy, Steve Wehmeyer, Steve Twigger, and Brian Walsh got together at O’Brien’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Santa Monica, California, experimenting with a unique blend of Scottish, Irish, and pop music. With the overwhelming support of the local audience, the musicians decided to form a band and Gaelic Storm was born. After only a short time performing at a number of pubs in the area, the group received the attention of James Cameron, who asked them to play the role of the band in the ship steerage party scene. This big break launched Gaelic Storm into international focus and gained the group a considerable number of followers. Today, the Irish-bred band plays over 125 dates every year, performing nationally and internationally from the United Kingdom to Japan.

Still consisting of original members Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, Gaelic storm has introduced percussionist Ryan Lacey, fiddler Jessie Burns, and multi-talented musician Pete Purvis, who excels on a variety of instruments, including the uilleann pipes, tin whistle, deger pipes, and highland pipes. Maintaining their signature Celtic flair, Gaelic Storm continues to produce unique, foot-stomping music for old and new fans alike to great acclaim. Their 2010 album, Cabbage, achieved quick success, debuting immediately at #1 on the Billboard world chart. Their latest album, entitled Chicken Boxer was released last year and proves that Gaelic Storm has no intention of changing their folk-inspired, raw Irish attitude.

When the saints go marching in, they’ll be doing it to the high-steppin’ sounds of New Orleans' Own Dukes of Dixieland. With trombones, trumpets and clarinets raised high, the Dukes proudly carry on one of New Orleans’ most valued traditions. If you want to get technical about it, Dixieland is an amalgam of brass band marches, French Quadrilles, ragtime and blues, played in a polyphonic format. For the rest of us, that means a spirited, joyful variation on jazz known to early musicians as small-band swing.

The DUKES of Dixieland blow traditional jazz and Dixieland into the 21st Century, weaving strands of pop, gospel, and country with authentic New Orleans sounds. More than 38 years of tradition stand behind today’s DUKES as they step forward with a sound that is durable and flexible, as jazz is meant to be. The DUKES of Dixieland: strong tradition, new ground, and great sounds.

The DUKES have worn their New Orleans jazz heritage proudly as globe-trotting jazz ambassadors from the heart of the Big Easy. They are the oldest continuing Dixieland jazz band and have sold out venues such as The Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian, to name but a few. Bright and brassy or smooth and dark as cane syrup, the DUKES bring a time-honored authenticity to all of the hits of Dixie’s yesteryear.

Sicilian Tenors "Amore"

If The Rat Pack and The Three Tenors were combined, it would be The Sicilian Tenors. Performing some of the world’s best music, tenors Aaron Caruso, Elio Scaccio, and Sam Vitale lend their classically trained voices to operatic and Italian favorites, including “O Sole Mio,” “Time to Say Goodbye,” and “That’s Amore.” An intimate journey from Hollywood to Italy, a Sicilian Tenors performance incorporates all of the tenor classics, delivered with perfect harmony.

Sicilian Tenor, Aaron Caruso, developed his interest in singing early, studying opera in Italy and New York. The warm-voiced tenor has performed some of the world’s most famous operas, including La Boheme and Mozart’s Bastien. He got his big break on Broadway, singing the role of Mario Lanza in Lanza! A Musical Tribute. Also a classically trained tenor, Elio Scaccio, has recently begun a promising solo career, releasing his pop-classical debut CD in 2010 entitled Lettere D’Amore. Scaccio’s album features original compositions and opera classics. Sam Vitale, the third of our Sicilian Tenors, has demonstrated his classically trained voice in roles from Carmen to Phantom of the Opera. Vitale not only sings for his country, but protects it as well, having served during Desert Storm.

The Sicilian Tenors are beloved in New York City, selling out Carnegie Hall and entrancing audiences with their nostalgic and soothing vocals. Performing the best of Italian opera and Italian-American classics, The Sicilian Tenors are a unique combination of New York style and classical excellence. This February, The Sicilian Tenors invite you to a night of powerful harmonies, drawing from Hollywood, Broadway, and Sicilian music for an unforgettable experience.

Poco

From the brilliant minds of Buffalo Springfield came Poco, the pioneer band of country rock. If you like soulful vocal harmonies and catchy Rock-n-Roll hooks with a hint of southern twang, you’ll love Poco. Considered by many to have defined the country rock genre, Rusty Young and his veteran band boast over 40 years of producing top hits such as “Keep on Tryin” and “Crazy Love.”

In 1968, when the supergroup Buffalo Springfield disbanded after only 2 years together, members Richie Furay and Jim Messina were faced with the task of redefining their place in the music industry. With the help of Rusty Young, George Grantham, and Randy Meisner, Poco was born with a focus on fusing the genres of country and rock in a way that had never been done before. The talented group achieved immediate success with their first album, “Pickin’ Up the Pieces”, a 1969 debut that would be considered a seminal album in the history of country rock music and the only debut album to ever receive a perfect rating from Rolling Stone magazine. Poco would prove unstoppable, producing over 24 original albums and dozens of chart-topping hits. Ten years after their founding, Poco would produce their most successful album, Legend, featuring the Top Twenty hits “Crazy Love” and “Heart of the Night” and achieving Platinum status, cementing Poco’s place as country rock superstars.

Today, Poco is still going strong. The legendary group now consists of original member Rusty Young as lead guitarist and singer, George Lawrence on drums, keyboardist Michael Webb, and bassist Jack Sundrud. Their latest album, “All Fired Up” was released earlier this year and continues to push boundaries and inspire fellow musicians and listeners alike. Their live performances, featuring a blend of their best hits and their newest experiments, bring audiences young and old to their feet.

The Machine Performs Pink Floyd

The Machine is back. After their highly successful performance last January, the most sought-after Pink Floyd tribute band returns to The Lyric Theater this winter for another journey to the dark side of the moon, performing some of the English rock band’s most groundbreaking and influential music from all 16 albums. With 20 years of experience under their belt, The Machine can proudly claim to offer one of the last remaining nearly authentic experiences of a live Pink Floyd concert.

Featuring bassist Adam Minkoff, keyboardist Scott Chasolen, guitarist Ryan Ball, and drummer Tahrah Cohen, The Machine has performed to packed audiences across the country and abroad, headlining at large clubs, casinos, and music festivals including Bonnaroo, Gathering of the Vibes, and Riverbend. This tribute band takes their music seriously, recreating the original experience with extraordinary musicianship, impressive lighting and extensive stage displays, and energetic stage presence. Known for their engagement with the audience, The Machine frequently takes song requests from audience members and is widely celebrated for their creative approach to creating set lists, relying on an A to Z set up in which one song is played for every letter in the alphabet.

Expanding upon their original show, The Machine has performed a number of shows with full symphonic orchestras, enhancing and adding depth to classic Pink Floyd numbers. Once merely a tribute band, the quartet has begun to attract a large and loyal fan following and the group has released several CDs and DVDs, including the 2006 release, Unplugged, containing a rare acoustic performance at B.B. King’s in New York City of obscure solo material from founding Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett and deep cuts from the early albums. Representing more than just a simple revival of the Pink Floyd legacy, The Machine has become a force in itself, not to be reckoned with and not to be missed.

Earl Turner's Box of 45's

A New Orleans resident and heir to a jazz legacy, Earl Turner was born with soul in his bones. Turner’s triple threat skills have sold-out performances from Las Vegas to Louisiana and now the Sin City’s “Male Vocalist of the Year” comes to The Lyric for a performance featuring the best of ‘70s rhythm and blues, from the O’Jays to the Temptations and more.  One of the finest entertainment acts in the country, Earl Turner’s performances will leave you begging for just one more song.

As the grandson of famous jazz artist and dancer L.C. “Speedy” Huggins, Earl grew up in a family surrounded by music. Inspired by his grandfather, Turner performed his first paid show at the age of 13 and never looked back. By 19, Earl Turner was traveling the United States with various show bands, quickly proving his place among the finest entertainers in the country. Earl continued his dream of performing and soon his music was heard across the Atlantic, reaching the Top 40 Dance Hit charts with “Love Caught You by Surprise.” Since his success internationally, Earl Turner has made a name for himself on the Vegas Strip, performing at the famous Dunes and Desert Inn as well as Caesars Palace. In his home town of New Orleans, Turner was welcomed with overwhelming praise. Not only did the Harrah’s name their grand ballroom the “Earl Turner Theatre”, but the aspiring entertainer was inducted into the New Orleans Hall of Fame as well.

Earl Turner’s rise to prominence in the entertainment industry was not without its struggles. After Hurricane Katrina devastated Turner’s home town of New Orleans, the artist was faced with the potential loss of his long time performance space at Harrah’s. His show was put on hold and Turner was forced to relocate to Las Vegas, leaving behind years of success and memories. Luckily Earl received even greater success in Nevada, but the artist has never forgotten his roots and gives back to the community whenever possible, volunteering for charitable organizations such as the Special Olympics, Opportunity Village of Las Vegas, and even serving as spokesperson for The Blood Center of Louisiana. This January, Earl Turner will be giving back to the Stuart community, performing a number of timeless and unforgettable songs, such as “Unchained Melody” and “My Girl” that will have the whole audience singing along.

As Pam's family comes together to support her, they must also prepare for the new reality that Alzheimer's disease brings. The Genius of Marian is both a close look at a much-feared illness and an intimate portrait of a loving family. Music by: Gary Malkin (www.garymalkin.com) and Zoe Keating (www.zoekeating.com)
